When the winter months roll around, if you live in an area where the weather is cold and prone to snow, don’t you love the look of untouched white snow that covers your outside world? And what about the nice ambiance of a crackling fire in the fireplace and a pot of savory and chunky soup on the stove?
Also, let’s not forget the other side of wintry weather – runny noses, sore throats, and nasty coughs. What I hate the most is a sore throat and that nagging cough that keeps you up at night.
But don’t despair! There are a few things you can do to help. If you are prone to coughs during the winter (or anytime for that matter), you can make your own honey cough syrup quickly so you don’t have to reach for the commercial kind.
My husband comes from a family with eight children. Love was plentiful, but money was very tight. He was fortunate to grow up in cold, blustery Chicago where winter was magical with lots of snow and plenty of snowball fights on the slippery lawn. His mom knew that with eight children, coughs and sore throats would overtake them sooner or later, so she would make her own cough syrup.
My husband remembers how sweet and soothing the cough syrup was. He never remembered a commercial syrup in the home. In my opinion, it is the best homemade cough syrup recipe ever. Would you like for me to share it with you? Okay here goes. There are only two ingredients. Yes, only two. Honey and whiskey. It really tastes good, too!
Here’s What You Do – Recipe #1:
A “Shot of Honey” Cough Syrup
Take a measuring cup and measure out 2 parts honey, one part whiskey (example – 1/2 cup of honey and 1/4 cup whiskey). Mix the syrup together thoroughly and then put in a glass container. After about an hour you will start to see the cough syrup turn from thick to thin. But it will start to thicken slightly again. It can last in your pantry for a year or more. The older it is, the better it works. (Don’t give to children under one year.) Enjoy.
I have one more recipe. This one is particularly great for children (over the age of one). It is a very mild, soothing and effective cough syrup. My daughter thinks this one is the best homemade cough syrup recipe. Here it is…
Here’s What You Do – Recipe #2:
Cinnamon Coconut Cough Syrup
- 1/4 cup raw honey
- 2 tablespoons coconut oil
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon powder
- 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
Melt the coconut oil and then add the other ingredients and mix until well blended. Very simple. Store in the refrigerator. You can use it in a number of ways. Straight from the refrigerator if you want. It will be creamy, cool and soothing to a sore throat.
You can also heat the syrup up over very low heat. You don’t want to kill the beneficial enzymes in the honey – so no high heat. Once it is liquefied, take as needed. You can also add this syrup to hot water or other beverage such as tea for a soothing drink that will help not only with coughing, but it will help to heal a sore throat too.
Honey, cinnamon, and coconut oil are all very awesome ingredients for infections and respiratory problems. Honey has been used for many centuries for coughs and other ailments. In fact, honey has been shown in many case studies to actually be as effective (or even better) than over-the-counter cough syrups that contain a long list of harmful ingredients.
So whip up a batch of cough syrup for yourself and your family. It’ll help send those coughs packing!
How many of you use homemade cough syrup in your family? What ingredients do you use? What are your best homemade cough syrup recipes? We’d love to hear from you!
