Where I live, the summer season is slowly being replaced by the coolness of the fall weather. That means peaches, watermelon and berries are not as plentiful, but apples and grapes are becoming abundant.
My friend has a massive garden loaded with delightful fruit trees and vines. I asked her if I could raid her grape harbor. She has the most amazing muscadine grapes. Have you ever eaten this type of grape? It’s my favorite because the flavor is unlike anything you will ever taste when it comes to grapes. The flavor is sweet and a wee bit tart. But what I particularly love is the earthy flavor that plays with your taste buds as you feast on this treat from nature.
If you are a wine drinker and haven’t had a chance to try muscadine wine, I encourage you to buy a bottle. It’s really delicious.
Health Benefits of Grapes
I’m sure you’ve read about the wonderful benefits of wine. It is loaded with antioxidants and very good for the cardiovascular system.
Grapes not only contain vitamins, but they also contains a substance called resveratrol. What is resveratrol? It is an antioxidant found in grapes and other foods such as chocolate. Resveratrol protects the grapes against fungi. The benefit to you is that it helps your body to regulate blood flow, so a winner for heart health. And I was delighted to learn that muscadine grapes actually have the highest concentration of resveratrol.
Benefits of Grapes for Our Skin
Your skin benefits from grapes, too. These little gems have anti-inflammatory properties, and this is good news for your skin because it helps to protect it against sun damage, skin discolorations and inflammation. Because they contain a substantial amount of vitamins and minerals, they are great for acne and mature skin.
The vitamins and fruit acids help lighten scars and increase blood circulation to the skin. This means that your skin will be brighter because the fruit acids will help to remove those stubborn dead skin cells sitting on the surface of your skin, preventing your moisturizers and other products from penetrating.
I’ve learned that grapes also contain a powerful plant compound called polyphenols. These compounds increase cellular turnover and increased production of collagen. This translates into a more youthful and fresh complexion, with more of a glow to your skin.
So are you as excited as I am about the excellent benefits of grapes for not only our health but our skin as well? And just think about this for a moment. Many high-end products that are very effective in beautifying the skin contain either grape essence, grape seed oil, or resveratrol. Many prestigious spas around the globe realize the amazing benefits of grapes and include highly effective wine therapies on their menus.
You don’t have to go to an expensive spa or even buy a high-end product containing grapes. You can make your own grape face mask. I have perfected an awesome grape and honey face mask that I want to share. It will leave your skin clarified, bright, soft and glowing. And you only need two ingredients! (For the incredible benefits of honey for your skin, check out this post – “Is Honey Good For Your Face.”)
Gorgeous Grape and Honey Face Mask
- One large grape (such as muscadine) or two smaller grapes
- One teaspoon of honey (preferably raw)
The above measurements are for one application of this face mask.
Here’s what you do: Crush grapes and skin (or use a food processor if you are making more than one application or you’re making more for your body as well) and mix it with the honey. Apply over a clean, wet face with a brush or a cotton pad, avoiding the eye area. Leave on for about 5 minutes, then rinse with warm water. Follow up with toner and moisturizer.
If you make more than one application, be sure to store the mask in the refrigerator covered for about one week.
This face mask is not only effective, but it is yummy as well. I got a little in my mouth, and it was so good I was tempted to eat it! But isn’t that what good skin care is all about – using safe, good ingredients that are so pure you can actually eat it.
You may notice a slight tingling due to the natural alpha hydroxy acids, and this is normal. But this acid may cause excessive irritation on some individuals. If you are one of these types, and if your skin feels irritated, rinse off. As with any product, if your skin is overly irritated, discontinue use. Natural as well as man-made products, unfortunately, can affect people in different ways. Just be mindful of this and you should be fine.
How many of you have used grapes as part of your skin beautifying routine?
