The term “milk and honey” goes way back to the times of antiquity. The Bible mentions “a land flowing with milk and honey” (or land of milk and honey), signifying prosperity and abundance. The Bible also indicates that it was part of the everyday diet of the Israelites in cooking and used in cosmetics.
Even Cleopatra, legend has it, used milk and honey regularly, and she attributed them to keeping her skin youthful and healthy. For more information on Cleopatra, read the post, Homemade Honey Mask Recipe – A Secret to Younger Looking Skin.
Isn’t it interesting that milk and honey are often mentioned together? But why is that the case? What is so unique about these simple ingredients? And what really are the health benefits of milk and honey together? Well, we know that honey is the most amazing product – antibacterial, a humectant, outstanding medicinal qualities, loaded with antioxidants, excellent to cook with and oh, did I say, absolutely delicious!
Milk contains many excellent properties, too. It is very nutritious and contains many essential vitamins, but it also has lactic acid, a mild but effective natural alpha-hydroxy acid for getting rid of toxins and exfoliating the top layer of your skin, leaving it smooth and soft and contributes to glowing skin. So when we examine the benefits of both products, we can see why the two are a dynamic duo! Hummmm, Cleopatra was really on to something after all 🙂
I have an absolutely irresistible milk and honey recipe that I know you’re going to just love. You don’t have to go to a fancy spa or even leave home because all the ingredients you need are right in your kitchen. It’s inexpensive, easy, all natural and it works! Your skin will be glowing in no time.
Things You’ll Need
- 1 cup honey
- 1 1/2 cups Epsom salt
- 2 cups whole milk (you can substitute soy milk if you want)
- 1/4 cup baking soda
- Few drops of essential oil (or even vanilla right out of your cupboard, my personal favorite), or a fist full of any fresh herb of your choice (such as lavender or mint)
- Measure cups
MIX THE INGREDIENTS: In a 1-quart measuring cup, heat the milk in the microwave for about 2 minutes on high. Add the honey, and then stir to combine.
PREPARE YOUR BATH: Run the bath water. Drop in the dry ingredients and then pour in the milk & honey mixture. Next, put in any whole herbs and/or the essential oil. Experiment until you find just the right combination of fragrance you like, keeping in mind that certain herbs, such as lavender, are good for making you sleepy and restful, and peppermint for increased alertness.
CREATE A RELAXING ATMOSPHERE: Don’t underestimate the power of a peaceful and relaxing surrounding. Why not light the candles, and put on soft music while your day’s stresses melt away along with all those dead skin cells and other toxins your body doesn’t need. After your bath, slip on a pair of comfy nightwear, and I promise you will feel refreshed, de-stressed, and fabulous.
