The winter weather usually wreaks havoc on our skin, doesn’t it? Lack of moisture, cold temperature, lack of sunshine and other factors leave our skin dry, irritated and itchy.
What can be done about it other than slathering ourselves with expensive or harmful ingredients?
Have you ever thought about using honey to make your own skin care products? “Why honey?”, you may ask. Glad you asked that question. Let’s find out why honey is so awesome.
Honey Is The Perfect Ingredient For Winter Skin
Honey is a humectant. That means it attracts moisture to our skin. It is very soothing and it is anti-fungal and anti-bacterial. Honeycomb, or bee wax, when mixed with other ingredients, acts as a very effective emollient and barrier. So it’s excellent for protecting our skin from the harsh elements of winter weather because it seals in moisture.
So grab a jar of honey and let’s whip up a few DIY honey skin care recipes to help chase the winter blues away and get your skin glowing again.
Recipe #1 – North Pole Hand Cream
What you’ll need:
2 tablespoons bee wax
2 tablespoons lanolin
5 Tablespoons almond or jojoba oil
10 drops chamomile essential oil
5 drops tea tree essential oil
3 tablespoons water
Melt the beeswax and lanolin over a simmering pot of water. Using a whisk, slowly add the oil until incorporated. While still whisking, add the water very slowly until the mixture becomes very thick and creamy. Finally, add in the essential oils. Your hands are going to love this! Store in the refrigerator if you don’t intend to use it every day.
Recipe #2 – Salt & Honey Body Scrub
What you’ll need:
2 tablespoons powdered coconut milk (or powdered whole milk)
1 cup sea salt
1/3 cup almond or sunflower oil
1/3 cup honey
10 drops lavender essential oil or essential oil of your choice
All you need to do is combine the ingredients together in a bowl until mixed thoroughly. The mixture should be creamy. You may add more oil or honey so that it is creamy and the consistency you prefer. If you’re not going to use it right away, it is best to store this wonderful scrub in the refrigerator in an airtight container. You can apply this scrub to your dampened face or any part of your body. Be sure to rinse well with warm water. Your skin should look and feel lovely.
Recipe #3 – Mighty Mineral Skin Mask
What you’ll need:
1/2 carrot, raw and unpeeled
4 slices cucumber, raw and unpeeled
1 small tomato or 1/2 large tomato
1/4 cup seaweed (dried, such as dulse)
1 tablespoon honey
1 tablespoon cornmeal or almond meal
1 teaspoon almond oil or oil of your choice
10 drops lemon, grapefruit or other citrus essential oil
Put all the vegetables in a food processor and combine until finely chopped. Add the honey and cornmeal (or almond meal) to form a thick paste. Finally, add the essential oil. To use, liberally pack the mask on your face and let it remain for about 20 minutes. Remove with warm water. Your skin should look and feel clarified and soft. Follow up with skin moisturizer of your choice. This is one of my favorite recipes for soft and glowing skin. The raw veggies contain vitamins and minerals that your skin craves during this time of the year.
